Bula from Fiji!

If you’re wondering where Wednesday went, well so are we! Bucks has told us we left it at the international date line, but there are a few of our intrepid travellers who are still mulling that one over. I guess we’ll just pick it up in two years on our next trip? 😊 And while we may not know 100% what day it is, we know where we are – we’re in Fiji baby!

Footnote: To really set the scene for you, I am writing this edition of the blog as I sit beachside with the waves gently  lapping at the shore, it’s tough to concentrate but it’s just another day at the office…..a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do!

Fiji, the land of beauty and relaxation, didn’t feel so relaxing when we landed at 5.45am this morning after a 10 ½ hour flight, to find that only 12 of our bags had made the journey with us. The rest were still in Los Angeles Airport and would be following us the next day. Panic ensued and a valid question was raised, are tracksuit pants and sneakers appropriate attire for a Fiji Island? We thought not. So while the ‘dirty dozen’ (or are they the clean dozen because they actually have clothes to change into?) stayed by the pool and relaxed, the other 25 of us did a quick dash to the shops for the essentials. After a lightning quick round trip, we headed back and dragged the ‘clothed ones’ out of the pool and hopped on the boat to take us to our island destination – Beachcomber Island Resort. Ahhhhhhh!

The memories of our morning of mayhem fell to the wayside as the boat pulled up on the island shore with the guitars strumming and the staff lining the beach offering their welcoming words of ‘Bula’. (The Titans have now picked up the ‘Bula’ phrase and they are running with it. We are ‘’bula-ing’ anything that moves).

It was hot, the sand especially, so we quickly went to our rooms and changed into bathers (or whatever swimming attire we had been able to purchase) and headed to the beach or the pool to cool off. After lunch, then the activities began, Some took advantage of the chance to see the baby turtles (Ava and Vaughn even had the knack to catch and hold them). We also had some intrepid travellers head out for snorkelling, we had a crew who were searching the island for hammocks (cause that’s what you do in Fiji) and another set who were hell-bent on finding coconuts (and couldn’t work out why they couldn’t climb the trees to get them). Even on a restful island, we’re busy!

I’ll be honest we thought all the activities would have necessitated an early night for our intrepid travellers, but it wasn’t the case. After tea we had a special song and cake by the Island staff for Mitch’s 18th birthday, and then the celebrations took hold. There was a highly competitive game of limbo, followed by the learning of a Fijian dance (which resembled the Fijian Nutbush) and an energetic round of ‘in and out’ ….. and then, they fizzled out. The sun, lack of sleep and fresh air had caught up with most who put themselves to bed early.

We're gearing up for another day of island activities tomorrow, before we prepare for the last leg home.

Fiji…you don’t say!

  • Fiji has 333 islands - only 110 islands have people living on them.
  • The International Dateline passes through the island of Taveuni. There’s a place there where you can stand in today and tomorrow at the same time!
  • The TV show, Survivor, is filmed in Fiji
  • Most airports on the islands have grass runways – only four out of the 28 runways are paved!
