Timor-Leste 2024 - Trip B / Day 12

25.07.24

After an eventful night of traditional Timorese and Australian dancing, we started our day with a delicious breakfast at the Bakhita Centre. With bags loaded on the troopy by our faithful drivers, we hit the road with the destination of Dili in our sights. It was too hard to resist a few stops along the mountainous coastline to soak up the views.

We visited the local craft market for some shopping before arriving at the Timor Lodge in Dili. An afternoon by the pool and a siesta prepared the group for the long anticipated afternoon tea with President Jose Ramos-Horta. We arrived at the presidents house with Eddie and our drivers by our side. Seated in the presidents outdoor entertainment area the conversations of politics, education and faith flowed alongside some good old fashion banter. The president treated us to a delicious variety of treats - and yes monkey brains and baby snakes were on the menu!

Fred bonded with the president over J.F. Kennedy, while Charlie spoke about his grandfather and peace keeping. Max discussed Timor’s relationship with South Korea and Ebony spoke about the scouts gathering that both Australia and Timor Leste attended. It was an honor and a privilege to share a meal with the President of Timor Leste and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Jose Ramos-Horta. Mrs Fisher and the president explored the exciting opportunity of a future presidential visit to Tenison Woods College. More information to follow!
