Teams - Fundamentals

23.07.2021

For better quality, Microsoft Teams should be installed on your device, although in a pinch it is possible to use a 'light' version from a pc using the link from an invitation email or the Portal@TWC page.

3 options to install the full program on a desktop/laptop computer include:

  • Direct link to Microsoft install page (link here)
  • Install from the O365/online version of Teams
  • Install from a meeting invitation email

To use Microsoft Teams on a phone or tablet, you must install the app from the appropriate app store or use this App install link.

During the setup process, ensure you sign in with your school email address and password.

Download it once in the online Teams:

When in Microsoft Teams online, down the left-hand side of the screen there should be a purple bar which contains sections such as activity, chats, etc. If you look to the very bottom of that bar, there will be an icon which looks like a computer with an arrow pointing down into it (highlighted in image below).

By clicking on this icon, you will begin to download the Microsoft Teams app.

Download the app or join a Teams meeting using an emailed invitation link:

Follow the link in the invitation email.

Choose to either download the full app, or use your internet browser. Using the app is best, as the browser version may have grainy video or poor audio.

Meetings/Calls:

To join meeting/call simply click the Join button. A screen will then display your face and you will need to click Join now.

Ensure sound is turned up on your device and microphone is turned up (if needed). If you are finding it difficult to hear sound, the person talking may be too far away from the microphone to be recognised.

Notifications:

Notification settings are enabled/disabled on an individual basis. More information from the Microsoft webite (here)

Notification for teams need to be turned on in order to have chats and meeting times appear as a notification.

To turn on notifications for a team, click on the three dots up in the right-hand corner of the team’s channel (generally there will only be one channel per team, may be more though depending on how the teacher has set it up).

A dropdown menu will appear. Then go to Channel Notifications. This brings up notification options.

The notification options need to be on the Banner and Feed options for both All new posts and Channel mentions. By turning on include all replies, this will notify when all messages have had any reply.

This will need to be done for all teams that you are apart of and all channels (if there are multiple) that need to have notifications allowed/ seen. Please be aware that this is only for chats and meeting times set through the calendar, it does not notify when a call has been started.

Switching Users in Teams - when multiple students use a single device

Families with multiple students and a single device can easily switch between users logged into Teams.
This will enable students to register their attendance and participate in class video meetings.
