Titans Open Basketballers Hit The Road For State Competitions

24.09.24

Open Boys Knockout Basketball: Facing off against the Adelaide 36ers affiliated specialist basketball school SEDA  College, our boys fought gallantly despite missing 2 key players to injury. Boasting terrific talent, size, athleticism, and shooting, SEDA came out on fire and full of confidence constructing an insurmountable first half lead. To our boy's credit, they fought hard in a tough situation playing the second half to a draw, but SEDA were just simply too good overall winning 74-45. Wonderful resilience and camaraderie meant the 3rd place playoff game against another talented side in Nazareth was a different story. Our boys played tough and connected man to man defense leading to more offensive transition opportunities. It was also an improved half court offensive performance, with effective screening and poised ball movement generating higher quality scoring opportunities. A tight tussle all the way through, but on the back of big plays down the stretch we ran out 54-48 victors. A 3rd place finish in the state is an outstanding achievement for these boys who should be extremely proud of their efforts against the odds.

Open Girls Knockout Basketball: Game 1: TWC vs St. Michaels (qualifier)

Our girls were caught napping at the start of the St. Michaels game, leading to an 0-12 start. Ava Collins scored the first bucket and settled the teams nerves. With this, the team defence lifted, getting us back in the game. Tenison started the second quarter with a 10 point deficit. Tight defence kept St. Michael’s to a 5-point quarter and field goals from Macca Burke, Claire Mitchell, Ava and Edie Easterby got us back within reach, two 3-pointers were scored in quick succession from Claire and Edie to edge ahead of St. Michaels at the half time break. We did a good job to build a lead in the third quarter, but a lack of discipline and an injury to Macca rattled nerves and had us down going into the final term. Both teams put up a strong fight, but with 45 seconds to go, St. Michaels scored a critical field goal and 3, putting them ahead by 6 at the final buzzer. Final Score 49-43 St. Michael’s way.

Game 2: Tenison Woods College vs Immanuel (for third place)

The girls were caught napping again, with Immanuel getting a 6-point lead before Poppy Venn got the Titans on the scoreboard. Immanuel dominated the first with an 11 point lead at the quarter time break. Ava Collins put on a clinic and then demand a sub from coach Matt. It was a well deserved rest after she had scored 13 of the teams 14 points for Q2. This ignited a flame within the Titans side and helped close the deficit to only 3 points. The game was tight in the third but the Titans still managed to narrow the gap further, heading into the final quarter down by 1 point. Back to back 3s from Cara Nulty and Poppy Venn gave us some breathing room. With one minute to go Titans were up by 1 point. The team kept their composure and at the final siren lead by 3 thanks to accurate foul shots by our year 12s Cara and Ava who drew two unsportsmanlike fouls from a frantic Immanuel. Final Score: 47-44 Tenison’s way!

Thank you to our outgoing year 12s, Ava and Cara for their leadership and commitment to the team. Both girls have represented the Basketball Program at the College with pride and we hope that their final win in navy blues is one they will never forget – finishing third best in the state. Coach Matt is already planning the 2025 campaign.
