Open Girls Runners-Up In Inaugural AFLW Knockout Competition

11.09.24

In a highly anticipated clash, the Open Girls AFLW team travelled to Adelaide to face Heathfield High School at Woodville Oval. The game saw Tenison, starting with the wind advantage in the first quarter, take an early lead thanks to a goal from Lana Shephard. Bell Coghlan was instrumental in the attacking play, creating multiple scoring opportunities throughout the match. Defensively, Penny Coleman and her backline were formidable. Penny, in particular, played a key role in keeping Heathfield goalless for the first quarter, with strong coverage and effective play on loose balls. Hannah and Chloe Bellinger also contributed significantly, maintaining composure and making the most of their opportunities. In the second quarter, Heathfield capitalised on the wind, applying relentless pressure and registering several behinds. Despite their dominance, they failed to convert enough chances into goals, allowing us to remain within striking distance as we moved into the third quarter. The third quarter saw an intensified battle. Heathfield's pressure increased, and they managed a quick goal despite the challenging conditions. Our efforts to break through their defense were hampered as Heathfield effectively pushed up the field and exploited the available space. We entered the final quarter trailing by 16 points. The final quarter proved challenging as Heathfield extended their lead to 60 points. Penny's absence from the defense was felt, and despite the deficit, there were many commendable individual performances. The team, with a significant number of younger players from Years 9 and 10, demonstrated resilience and potential. Special thanks to those who stepped up when needed, and to Lewis for his valuable advice and running duties. With more training and experience, this young team has a promising future ahead. The effort and commitment shown in the game are commendable, and with continued development, the team is wellpositioned for future success.
