26.09.23

The Titans went into the final day of the State Championship on the back of convincing wins in Round 1 and 2, after defeating Grant High School, Mount Gambier High School, St Francis de Sales College and Encounter Lutheran College in the Statewide Knockout Tournament.

The final saw Tenison take on the highly regarded SEDA College, part of the Football SA Sports Development Program, partnered alongside Football SA and Adelaide United. With seven players in the squad part of the previous days Year 10 campaign the task provided an outstanding opportunity for the boys to play at the state’s leading football complex against one of the state’s most highly regarded football schools. In warm conditions the Titans started the contest well holding their own against the quality opposition however they found themselves one nil down on the 15-minute mark. A second followed soon after and with 5 minutes to play in the first half the boys found themselves 3 nil down and with a mountain to climb.

The second half started well with several tactical changes having an impact and with 5 minutes on the clock the boys found a lifeline when Jack Latham found the net after some string work from Ronald Bati. Latham made it two only minutes later and with 10 minutes left to play the gap was closed after Moo Bya Say slammed home the equaliser. With scores level and everything to play for the Titans pushed one more time and it was Latham who was brought down inside the box enabling Marcus Gajic to step up and slot the penalty to make it 4 and complete an outstanding turn around.
End to end football saw the Titans pushing for the fifth goal however it was SEDA who found the net on the counter attack with 7 minutes to play levelling the score once again at 4 all. With only seconds on the clock the Titans continued to push for the winner and they got their reward after a shot inside the box struck a defender’s hand with 30 seconds left to play. Mee Reh Htoo stepped up and found the net to complete one of the most entertaining football comebacks scoring 5 in the second half and defeating SEDA College 5 goals to 4.

The State final saw Tenison take on Norwood International High School. The final took place in front of a vocal crowd and on the main pitch at the Service SA Stadium. The boys settled well and were able to create several chances and reach the 15-minute mark with the score tied at nil all. The game took a twist when trying to push forward the Titans were hit on the counter and after an initial block and deflection found themselves 1 nil down after 20 minutes. The remainder of the first half was an even contest with the halftime break providing a break from the warm conditions.

The second half started well with the Titans working hard and playing a more settled style of football. With time running out and less than ten minutes remaining the Titans continued to work hard to find a way through the Norwood defence. The task became much harder when with 5 minutes remaining against the run of play the boys went 2 nil down after a quick counter attack. With only minutes remaining the Titans lifted for one last time with Mee Reh Htoo hitting the post in the dying minutes and several chances to score unable to be taken. The final whistle ended the match with the Titans going down 2 nil.

The result completed three outstanding days of football with the colleges Year 7/8 Girls team finishing second in the state, the Year 9/10 Boys side finishing in third place and the Open Boys team finishing runner up.
