Acknowledging Holy Week

13.04.22

For Tenison Woods College and the Catholic community, Easter is the most significant event on the Church calendar and a time of reflection.
“I am really looking forward to this special time as we gather to mark the death and resurrection of Jesus. This year, as a parish, we are excited to welcome three new members to the Catholic community at the Easter Saturday Vigil. These people will celebrate the sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion after preparation in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program. We look forward to warmly welcoming them into full communion with the Church.” - Chloe Shanahan

This week, students of Tenison Woods College focused on the themes of Holy Week. They have done this through praying the Stations of the Cross - commemorating the last steps of Jesus on Good Friday. Students have also partaken in Project Compassion fundraisers since the beginning of Lent (Ash Wednesday).

Paschal candles to light up Easter

Year 5 students Jenit Jenni and Caitlin Mugavin are the winners of this years’ Paschal Candle design competition, run by the Catholic Identity and Mission (CIM) team here at Tenison Woods College. Designing an artwork to appear on the sacred Paschal candles, is just one activity students take part in during the Lenten period and reiterates the meaning of Easter and why it is such a significant time for Catholics. Year 5 students were invited to create a watercolour artwork representing the Eucharistic community to which they are a part of.

Jenit’s candle will be used in the Tenison Woods College community and Caitlin’s will be used at St Paul’s Church and will be lit for the first time at the Easter Vigil Mass this coming Saturday.

For Catholics, the Paschal candle is a powerful symbol of a pillar of fire and a reminder that “Christ is our Light”.
