New Athletics Podium

10.03.21

The College has recently unveiled the new sports podium at the Year 7-12 Athletics Carnival. This new podium acknowledges the effort the participants have put in to be placed in any of the events throughout the year and beyond.

The construction of the new podium has also allowed the college to highlight some of the equipment and sustainability initiatives that have been undertaken in the last few years. As you may be aware, we are systematically dealing with our waste and are recycling plastic, with the aid of all the students. The end product, 3mm plastic sheet, has been used to label the front of each of step on the podium, as seen in the photos.

These numbers were essentially produced by granulating soft drink bottle tops and heating (220+ degrees C). This product is then pressed in a controlled way to pre-determined sizes. The numbers were then laser cut on the College’s laser cutter, purchased 2 years ago.

Thanks must go to a number of people and suppliers. The board for the podium was made and supplied by BORGs (Kym Vaughan and Sam Whelan) on White Avenue, painting was completed by the Tenison Woods College Ground Staff; construction of the podium was performed by various Tech classes and the numbers were created by students in numerous year levels. When you consider the simplicity of the project, the benefits of the building process should be acutely obvious. We have involved new technology, with collaboration between numerous faculties and students throughout the College. We also have involved our wider community with the procurement of the resources required for the construction. All in all, this project has been a great success with so many people involved at various levels. The best part though, is we will see and use this structure safely, for many years to come.
