Refugee Week

24.06.20

This year’s Refugee Week theme was ‘Celebrating the Year of Welcome’! In classes, students have been discussing how we can, individually, as a school, and as a Catholic community, make our voices heard to truly welcome others. Students also talked about the difference we can all make by supporting and standing in solidarity with one another. We now know a welcoming country starts with us.

Year 8 students in their Religion classes have been focusing on the plight of refugees locally, nationally and internationally. They have been encouraged to see the correct information and to consider compassionate actions that can be taken. They have also investigated the many ways the Catholic Church acts to bring justice and dignity to the situation of refugees.

We interviewed some Year 8 students about what they have learnt during Refugee Week, here’s what they had to say:

“It is important that everyone knows that people come to this country wanting a better life and more basic rights for themselves and their families.”

“Our Pope and Bishops urge everyone to not only treat refugees with compassion but also act to change the world to make it safer and fairer for everyone.”
