Year 12 English Students were treated to a rich learning experience on
Friday 22 May. Renowned South Australian poet Geoff Goodfellow spoke with students via Microsoft Teams.
Geoff brought a wonderful atmosphere to the room and chatted candidly with staff and students about himself, his poetry and his life growing up in the
inner northern suburbs of Adelaide. He recited the poems for the students and gave extensive background information on each poem, giving students the
opportunity to ask Geoff some questions.
Geoff has co-written a book with a teacher entitled ‘The People’s Poet –
Transformed’ based on the transformative task that is now a part of the
Australian School Curriculum for senior students of English.
His presentation thoroughly engaged the students, who now have a broader appreciation of his craft. Geoff believes that poetry can have a social use – like his poem entitled ‘True Love’ which is used in courtrooms throughout Australia to warn youths against the toxicity of drug addiction.
COVID-19 has been a busy writing period for the 70 year old poet who still enjoys touring and entertaining crowds around the country.
