‘On the Wall’ Art Project

27.05.20

A recent collaboration between local artist Justin Clarke and Year 10
students has been taking shape in Commerce Arcade on Commercial Street.
With funding and support from the City of Mount Gambier’s Creative Arts Fund and Riddoch Art Gallery, students have been given the opportunity to
experience Visual Art as a career as well as having a hand in brightening one of our public spaces.

Students worked with Justin to brainstorm ideas for the mural which centred around what home means to them, what comes to mind when they think of the Limestone Coast and what is important to each individual. Sketches were drawn up by the Year 10 students and then passed onto Justin who brought the images together to create the composition that we see today. Once the
mapping had been transferred to the wall, students worked with Justin and Aileen Costales-Clarke to bring their ideas to life.

Throughout the painting sessions, many members of the public stopped to watch our artists hard at work and to admire the vision that was being created. Given the challenges that our world has faced in the past few months, the art work aims to give our community hope and put a smile on their faces.

This has been a wonderful experience for our students who have loved every part of this project. Whilst the mural is not yet complete, we encourage the
community to visit it, watch the development and admire the work of Justin, Aileen and our students. Keep an eye out as we will be sharing the completed image soon!
