Music Camp Fun

19.03.20

Last week, 52 excited students and 6 staff headed to Karnkendi in Nelson for the first of our two annual music camps. This camp involved our more senior groups and students from Thunder Drum Corps, Wind Ensemble, Senior Vocal Ensemble, Big Band, Saxophone Ensemble, Small Jazz Ensemble and Concert Choir.

Our busy three day camp involved many rehearsals with students learning new music. The two Music Leaders, Rosie van Eyk and Livvie Boylan conducted many teamwork activities for the students under the theme of ‘Time Travellers’. A focus of the camp is working on collaboration between the many ages of students, and these activities were fantastic in supporting many new friendships.

A highlight of the camp was our two concerts. The first concert was held for the campers and their families who were able to travel to Nelson. This was the first opportunity for the campers to see what the other groups had been working on. This concert also involved an opportunity for the campers to perform by themselves or in groups. These student-led acts were judged and we offer congratulations to – 1st place Tally Montgomery, 2nd place Mia Van Gaans, Maixence Williams and Mary Moreto and 3rd place Liza Davison and Nadia Munguakonkwa.

Our second concert was performed in Millicent to St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School. This was a great opportunity for the students to share their love of music with others. It was fantastic to teach this school a new song, and also to see both schools playing and interacting with each other afterwards.

Music Camps are a highlight of the year for many of our students. I would like to congratulate all students and staff on another inspiring and engaging camp.
