FTC Robotics Challenge Inspires Students

18.12.19

Last Thursday, the Tenison Woods College ‘Magmadroids’ travelled to

Sydney to compete in the FTC Robotics challenge at Macquarie University. The challenge consisted of designing and building a robot that can perform menial tasks such as moving objects and stacking bricks autonomously and via remote control. The team ranged from Years 8 to 11 and consisted of Liam Moulden, Dylan Leadbetter, Mathew Leadbetter, Aiden Mustey, Ethan Hopgood, Ashley de Jong and Flynn Davison. The students represented the College with pride, finishing in 15th place out of the 40 teams present at the national event. This is an amazing effort for the students considering they only started building their robot in October whilst many other schools began early in the year. The students returned on Sunday, enthusiastic about the competition next year and with an increased awareness of how to best prepare for and
perform at the event.
This trip would not have been possible without the generous support of
Tenison Woods College, Green Triangle Electronics, Thompson Electrical and Air-Conditioning, Trident Tyre Centres, OneFortyOne, KCA Millicent Mill,
eNVIsion Limestone Coast, MLC Advice, BP Nangwarry, Solomons Flooring, Whitehead Timber Sales, Hyland Fox Signs, Kmart and Bunnings as well as members of the community who made donations. Please show your support in turn for these businesses.
The team would be welcoming any local businesses who would like to form an ongoing supporting relationship to help with the purchase of upgraded
motors, wheels, actuators, sensors etc. so that they can continue to develop more sophisticated robots and, potentially, start a second team.
