Science and Engineering Challenge

05.09.19

Last week, 23 Students from Years 8, 9 and 10 travelled to Adelaide to take part in the State Final of the Newcastle University Science and Engineering Challenge. This is the first time that the College has made the State Finals in recent memory.

The Students were a little intimidated when it was discovered that the majority of the other teams from across the State were made up solely of Year 10 Students. However, to their credit, they carried themselves well throughout the competition.

Our eight sub-teams were randomly allocated tasks such as:

  • bridge-building
  • code-making
  • optimising power grids and
  • making an earthquake-resistant tower.

These challenges earned points for the school. Cummins Area School were the State victors and will go on to the National Final in Bunbury, Western Australia. Tenison Woods College finished in 8th place. Students learned a lot, and the younger team members will take their experience with them for future competitions.
