Timor-Leste Immersion Participants Make a Difference Abroad

25.07.19

Our Timor-Leste Immersion group have recently returned to Australia. All Students and Staff were inspired by some of the wonderful people they met, the assistance they were able to give, and the rich experiences they will hold forever in their hearts and minds.

Some of the highlights from Students:

We spent 2 nights at the Dominican Orphanage. Here we met Sister Belen and the kids welcomed us soooo sweetly!!!! The light on their faces is something we will never forget.” - Ava

At Bakhita, we were welcomed very beautifully by some amazing kids and adults who just made us feel very humble.” – Daniel

We headed up to the mountains, just out of Dili, to the Dara war memorial where we learnt about the relationship between Australia and Timor during WW2, and drank a refreshing banana juice.” – Letitia and Ruby

After admiring the views, we drove back down the mountain and to the church where we were greeted with coffee, tea and biscuits. The sun was beginning to set at around that time so we all went outside and watched the sun fall behind the sea and the Indonesian border.” – Julian

At around 9:00am, we headed to the big Sunday Mass where we presented the priest with a Mary MacKillop statue and an Australian Flag. Mrs Sharp also got dressed up and did a reading at the mass in Tetun, which she did beautifully. We also got to be a part of the choir and sang 2 songs.” – Michelle and Alex
