Knights, Princesses and Fairy Tale characters take over Junior School

04.07.19

Throughout Term 2, the Year 1 classes have been focusing on Fairy Tales. As part of the reading program, the Year 1’s have read a range of Fairy Tales, then analysed and compared the characters, settings and plots. During Writers Workshop they explored the narrative style features of Fairy Tales as well as other commonalities.

Students were then encouraged to include these features in their own books. This celebration occured last Friday on our annual ‘Year 1 Fairy Tale Day’, where Year 1 students came dressed as their favourite Fairy Tale character. During the day the students participated in craft and writing activities. They had some amazing creations, from castles to baskets for Little Red Riding Hood to story settings which included forests, cottages and tiny characters.

After recess the students were given an opportunity to write their own Fairy Tale book –incorporating an orientation, problem and resolution as well as the traditional opening line of ‘Once upon a time’ and ending of everyone living ‘happily ever after’. At the assembly, students presented their work and participated in a parade to really show off their costumes. The Year 1 Fairy Tale day was a rousing success and we look forward to seeing what characters join us next year.
