Stella Stamatakis showcases Cultural Diversity with new book

27.06.19

During Refugee Week, ELCC to Year 3 students were very fortunate to have
Stella Stamatakis present her newly published book, ‘What’s a Yiayia?’
This book explores the varied names used for ‘Grandmother’ that different
cultural groups in Australia use, and also includes descriptions of yummy
food that children can enjoy cooking with their Grandmothers.

Stella shared with the children the process for writing her book and how it was published.
One of the funny stories involved her French illustrator originally
drawing scones as large sponge cakes.

The children were very engaged with the story and were very enthusiastic in sharing the names they use for their grandmothers and the food they make with them. Overall a wonderful
celebration of cultural diversity in Australia.
