Cardijn Exchange wraps up 2 days of friendly competition

29.05.19

This year’s exchange marked the 33rd anniversary of the annual event, with both schools well represented by their cohorts of students participating in a variety of sports. These sports included basketball, netball, football, futsal, volleyball and mixed touch with the annual exchange debate highlighting the Monday evening activities as it does every year.

For the first time since 2007, Cardijn College has defeated Tenison Woods College on our home turf - 6 to 5.

Congratulations to The Rijken Doyle Medalists, they were Connor Prior & Emily Dawe.

The skill level of competition was again of the highest standard and both College’s participated to the best of their abilities. What was a standout though was the level of school spirit the Cardijn College students displayed and the support they provided for their fellow peers is something to be admired and strived to emulate.

Futsal

Girls Futsal

The girls Futsal team kick the carnival off with an amazing effort. Titans girls started the game on the front foot and pressed Cardijn hard, with some great play from Ellie Seaton and Emma O'Callaghan. Unfortunately, the team couldn't quite capitalise on all the early pressure and Cardijn managed to hit them on the counter-attack, going into the break in front. The girls came out strong in the second half and got right back into the game, only again to fall short right at the end. Overall, the girls performed very well and were unfortunate to go down in a close contest with the end score being 2-4.

Most Valuable Player- Ellie Seaton

Sportsmanship Award- Letitia Izzo

Boys Futsal

The boys started off strong and controlled the game from the moment it started. Connor Prior and Broc Linden led the Titans team and were able to find the net with ease. The Tenison Woods College boys dominated the game throughout and capped off a fantastic performance with a commanding 10-4 victory.

Mixed Touch Football

Touch football kicked off on Monday with Tenison winning the coin toss. The cold, biting wind battered down on the two teams as they battled for the win. Both teams put up a very strong fight but Cardijn were able to take the lead. Tenison fought hard to catch Cardijn but Cardijn were too far ahead. The game was exciting to watch with great athleticism and sportsmanship being shown from [dNM1] both teams. This display brought a highly competitive and defensive game which saw a polished Cardjin team prevail 3 Try’s to Tenison 0.

Basketball

Girls Basketball

A terrific performance from the Titan’s girls squad, applying diligent defensive pressure to force turnovers and enable a running game to open up. Led from the front by Captain Emily Dawe, the girls displayed good teamwork and unity, sharing the ball around on the offensive end to secure a comfortable victory. Cardijn were unable to keep up with the skill and speed of our talented, hard working group.

Score: TWC 62 – Cardijn 16

Most Valuable Player- Lucy Denton

Sportsmanship Award- Emmason Ilsley

Boys Basketball

Our boys were dynamic from the opening tip, and, similar to the girls, the boys forced Cardijn into regular turnovers allowing them to display their athleticism and skill on the break. The Titans boys punished the Cardijn zone with superior skills and shooting, products of the hard work the group has put into High Performance sessions. A professional and mature performance from an exciting group of young men. Score: TWC 82 – Cardijn 20

Most Valuable Player- Oli Thomson

Sportsmanship Award- Joel Dent

Overall a very pleasing effort in Basketball from both squads both winning comfortably and displaying the improvement in their games as a result of continual hard work in our high performance sessions.

Girls volleyball

Cardijn got off to a great start, but Tenison won the first set 25-20. Cardijn were too strong in the second set and won 25-20. They also held on in the third set with a win of 15 -7.

Debate

After a day of physical competition, the stage was set for ‘sport of the mind’ with the debate on the topic ‘That Technology has Made Life Better’. Both teams were well-prepared, with great research and information presented through an entertaining and hard-fought debate.

The challenge of holding your peers’ attention on your own for five minutes is a daunting one, and each speaker rose to the occasion, displaying poise and thought in delivering their arguments.

Arguing the affirmative, Tenison Woods College presented an enthusiastic, wide-ranging argument with plenty of examples in communication, medicine, transport and everyday uses. Cardijn College presented the negative, focusing on social media, mental health and the environment.

Edie Jones was named best speaker from Tenison Woods College, drawing continued laughter and cheers from the audience with her sustained and humorous rebuttal. Gabrielle Connolly was named best speaker from Cardijn and the speaker of the debate with her thoughtful explanation of arguments and reasoned rebuttal. The audience were continually informed and entertained by each speaker, and in the end Cardijn were awarded the debate. A fantastic effort from all involved.

Football

Winning the toss, Titans Boys were kicking with a slight breeze, but it was Cardijn who got off to a blistering start. They brought pressure and skill and kicked the first 2 goals of the game. The 2nd quarter saw Tenison improve their tempo, but Cardijn still managed to kick 2 late goals and kept Tenison scoreless. In the 3rd quarter, Tenison finally broke the wall and kicked 2 goals. Titans got their major ball movers into the game and the boys used the dangerous Titans forwards to their advantage. Only a couple of goals separated the teams at the final change, but Cardijn proved to be the fitter and cleaner team in the long run.  The highly skilled match rolled out a final score of Cardijn 08.09.57 to Tenison 02.03.15.

Netball

To wrap up the Exchange, the netballers took to the courts to complete the 2 days of competition.

In the first match, the netball 'A' teams went head-to-head. Tenison made a fast start to the game. They set up a strong double-figure lead and their strong defense over the rest of the game saw the Titans winning 52 to 31.

Most Valuable Player- Paige Nitschke

Sportsmanship Award- Sophie Ellis

In the netball 'B' match, Tenison Woods College started strongly again and as in the first game, held onto that early lead for the win. Titans defeated Cardijn 44 to 23.

Most Valuable Player- Emily Dawe

Sportsmanship Award- Chelsea Croser
