Subject Description

The Year 7 Tennis Academy is designed for students who are beginning their journey in tennis. The focus is on developing foundational skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Students will learn the basics of tennis techniques, including grips, strokes, and footwork.

This provides opportunities for students to develop and apply positive personal and social skills to establish and maintain respectful relationships while promoting fair play, resilience and inclusivity.

Sports Academy participants are expected to be committed to a high standard of performance and dedicated to developing their skills and knowledge within their chosen sport.

Content

The course emphasises fitness, foot and hand-eye coordination, and gameplay to reinforce skill acquisition in a fun and supportive environment.

Students will develop specialised movement skills and concepts such as:

  • Introduction to basic strokes (forehand, backhand, serve, volley, smash)
  • Basic grip and stance on shots
  • High low high swing on groundstrokes
  • Basic footwork for stroke setup
  • Understanding racquet head control
  • Introduction to timing and rhythm
  • Continental grip on serve and volley
  • Developing topspin

Assessment

Practical and theoretical assessments are based on Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards.
