Subject Description

Performance focus

In Semester 2 of Year 10 Dance, students will deepen their understanding and appreciation of dance through both practical and theoretical components. They will explore various dance styles and techniques, learning and creating complex choreographies.

Emphasis will be placed on performance skills, with opportunities to showcase their work at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre.

\This course aims to enhance students' physical capabilities, artistic talents, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for future dance studies.

Content
  • The Body: Study of body articulations, weight transfer, and awareness.
  • Dance Skills: Technical (control, alignment, balance) and expressive skills (confidence, projection, musicality).
  • Dance Elements: Space, time and dynamics
  • Structural Devices: Choreographic tools and compositional forms.
  • Production Elements: Lighting, performance space, sound, costumes, sets, props.
  • Safe Dance Practices: Understanding the musculoskeletal system and preventing injuries.
  • Choreography and Performance: Using elements of dance to convey ideas.
  • Communication Skills: Effective audience engagement.
  • Innovative Movement: Building and manipulating movement phrases.
  • Collaboration: Working with others to create and refine dance works.
  • Technologies: Applying innovative technologies in choreography.
  • Performance Analysis: Reflecting on personal and others' performances.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on both practical and theoretical task. Mostly practical based; Big emphasis on performance element.
