Subject Description

In Semester 1 of Year 9 Dance, students will concentrate on refining their dance technique and mastering the art of choreography.

Through both practical and theoretical components, students will explore various dance styles and techniques, developing the skills necessary to create original choreographies.

The course emphasizes understanding choreographic tools and applying them to different dance genres, preparing students for performance opportunities in the latter part of the year.

Content

Understanding Dance:
The Body: Study of body articulations, weight transfer, and awareness.
Dance Skills: Technical (control, alignment, balance) and expressive skills (confidence, projection, musicality).
Dance Elements: Space, time, dynamics, and relationships.
Choreographic Devices: Tools and compositional forms for creating dance.
Safe Dance Practices: Understanding the musculoskeletal system and preventing injuries.
Creating Dance:

Choreography: Using elements of dance to convey ideas and emotions.
Movement Innovation: Building and manipulating movement phrases.
Genre Exploration: Creating choreographies in various styles (e.g., Contemporary, Jazz, Hip-,Hop, Cultural dance etc).
Collaboration: Working with peers to create and refine dance works.
Technologies: Applying innovative technologies in choreography.
Responding to Dance:

Dance Literacy: Using appropriate terminology to discuss performance and choreography.
Cultural Perspectives: Analyzing diverse cultural influences in dance.

Assessment

Both theoretical and practical tasks.
