Stage 1 History

Subject Description

In Stage 2 Modern History, students will explore some of the defining moments of the 20th century, - chiefly the rise of the Nazis and their grip on Nazi Germany, followed by the colossal clash between East and West in the Cold War. Students will engage with and analyse a variety of historical sources, stepping into the past to better understand the present and exploring how ideology, propaganda, and power has shaped the modern world.

Content
  • Germany (1918-1948) – this will involve an in-depth examination of the nation of Germany in the 20th century, with particular focus given to the rise and fall of the Nazis. Students will be expected to show an understanding of the events that led to the election of Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany, along with the nature of life under the regime, and finally the defeat of the Nazi regime and the establishment of the post-war division of Germany.
  • The Cold War – students will examine the causes and nature of the Cold War. Students will be expected to show an understanding of the perspectives through which the opposing sides viewed the events. Specific focus will be given to how the Cold War ultimately led to the collapse of the USSR and the creation of the modern world.
  • Own choice investigation- Students will undertake an individual historical study based on an aspect of the world since c.1750. Students will explore and research a historical idea, event, person, or group in depth. They will interpret and synthesise evidence to support their argument and draw conclusions in an essay totalling 2000 words.
  • Exam- Students will sit an externally assessed exam for this subject, where they will be required to conduct a source analysis and essay in the allotted time.
