Successful completion of Stage 1 English
Students explore the relationship between author, text, and audience, with an emphasis on how language and stylistic features shape ideas and perspectives in a range of contexts.
Students consider social, cultural, economic, historical, and/or political perspectives in texts and their representation of human experience and the world. They also explore how the purpose of a text is achieved through the application of text conventions and stylistic choices, positioning the audience to respond to ideas and perspectives. Students can reflect on their personal values and those of other people by responding to aesthetic and cultural aspects of texts from the contemporary world, the past, and Australian and other cultures.
In this course, students will study a film, novel, poetry, or other extended text. Creating texts is a feature of this course, and it is therefore aimed at students who have a preference for creative writing and text construction. Students are also required to write a 2,000-word comparative study, which forms their external assessment in place of an exam.
Students who complete this subject with a grade of C- or better will meet the SACE's literacy requirements.
