Subject Description

Modern History A is an exploration of some of the ideologies, revolutions, and rivalries that shaped the modern world in the 20th century.

Through studying the post-World War 2 world order and the outbreak of the Cold War, to the dramatic days of the Russian Revolution in 1917, students will come to understand how the roots of many of today’s political divides find their origins in these events whilst learning to analyse, evaluate and draw conclusions using historical sources.

Content
  • The Cold War – this will involve an examination of the causes and nature of the Cold War, with specific focus on the origins of the East-West divide after the defeat of the Nazi’s in World War 2. Students will be expected to show an understanding of the perspectives through which the opposing sides viewed the events as well as engage in case studies of various events which occurred.

  • The Russian Revolution – this was one of the most significant events of the twentieth century and students will explore the background to, causes of, and the short and long term impact of the revolution.

Assessment

Assessment will consist of a wide variety of written exercises, research work, orals, essay writing and source analysis.
