Subject Description

This course is designed for students interested in Stage 2 English Literary Studies. It focuses on the skills and strategies of critical thinking applied in order to fully interpret, critique and respond to a variety of text types.

Through shared and individual study of texts, students encounter different opinions, have opportunities to exchange and develop ideas, find evidence to support a personal view, learn to construct logical and convincing arguments, and consider a range of critical interpretations of texts. The course also introduces students to the study of critical perspectives and their application in responding to texts.

In this course students will study a novel, film, play, selection of poetry and a range of shorter texts.

Students must successfully complete Year 10 English with a minimum of a B grade.

Content
  • Analyse Texts: Interpret and analyse a range of literary texts, identifying themes, techniques, and viewpoints.
  • Create Texts: Produce coherent and purposeful texts for various audiences and purposes.
  • Critical Thinking: Develop and articulate well-supported arguments and responses with a greater awareness of critical perspectives.
  • Effective Communication: Communicate ideas clearly and effectively in both written and oral forms.

Students should provide evidence of their learning through four assessments each semester, with at least one assessment from each assessment type. At least one assessment should be an oral or multi-modal presentation, and at least one will be in written form.
