Subject Description

This course explores in some depth the principles of genetics and evolution.

Students must choose one Biology module: Either Pre-SACE or General. 

Students wishing to do Stage 1 Biology in year 11 are required to do Pre-SACE Biology in Year 10.

 

Content

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Carry out a practical activity and write a scientific report.
  • Write in the genre of a Science as a Human Endeavour Essay. Describe the structure and function of DNA and chromosomes.
  • Model patterns of inheritance with Punnett squares and pedigrees.
  • Describe gene technologies and discuss ethics.
  • Explain the principles of adaptation and evolution.
  • Explain in simple terms how the sequence of bases in DNA is used to build proteins.
  • Consider how point mutations cause changes in DNA sequences that can result in non-functioning proteins
Assessment

Students will be assessed on their scientific knowledge, practical and investigation skills as well as problem solving and communication skills.  

Assessment tasks include:

  • Two tests
  • A Science as a Human Endeavour Report
