Subject Description

Illuminating Ideas in Wood

In this course students will design from the bottom up.  By blending numerous skills and protocols across the D&T workshops, the student will be able to gain skills and understanding which will be required to create an individualised project.

Illuminating Ideas in Wood is the subject area where the students are able to integrate materials and systems to create functional, multi-faceted products. All activities in this course aid the students’ ability to apply knowledge and understanding of how to use hand tools and operate basic workshop equipment and machinery.

Students will work with different materials and take into consideration the use of engineered joints, the workability of the material, adhesives and their application.  In using the different materials, they will understand the different characteristics and properties of these materials and make informed decisions on how to cut, fit, sand and finish each material.

This subject also integrates elements of digital technologies such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), and laser printing project designs as well as simple yet sophisticated electronics, wood and plastics (acrylic).

This course is an engaging, ‘hands on’ experience, the student will enjoy.  All facets are of the course encourage the students to step outside their comfort zone but at the same time, influence their expectations to work to a high standard.  The course will increase the students understanding in multiple areas which will allow them to make informed decisions for future subject choices in the middle and senior school - Design and Technology.

Content
  • Students will learn how to effective design, and structure works to communicate ideas, perspectives, and technological needs.
  • They will explore different artistic techniques and CAD to create artistic design which will be applied to the front of their project
  • Students will utilise pre-production templates and D&T skills to create infrastructure required in their major project. They will understand the importance of careful planning, organisation, and collaboration in the systematic creation process.
  • Students will learn to utilise suitable engineered joints to create boxes in timber
  • They will learn how to operate all tools effectively, understanding their technical usage and functionalities of both power and hand tools.
Assessment
  • Assessment in this course will be based on students’ active participation in practical activities, the quality of their project work and their active use of power and hand-tools their ability to effectively communicate ideas and meaning, and their understanding of the technical aspects involved in project creation.
