______________________________________________________________________________
On Monday 31 July, students in the High Performance Sports Program were lucky enough to meet former Adelaide Thunderbirds Captain and newest member of the Collingwood Magpies Netball Club, Erin Bell, along with Sydney Swifts 2017 MVP, Maddy Proud. All High Performance athletes had the privilege to hear the girls speak of their journey to the top of netball in Australia. They discussed the importance of nutrition and recovery, as well as some of the challenges that come with being in the media and the expectation to perform week in, week out. The High Performance and Ignite Program Netballers were then put through a training session where they were taught some new drills and skills. The day ended with a shared lunch for all HPSP netballers, where they had time to really get to know Bell and Proud and find out what it’s like to be a professional netballer. Some students even had the chance to join Bell and Proud for dinner the night before at Fasta Pasta in Mount Gambier. A fantastic, memorable experience for all involved!

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Feast Day
It is appropriate that next week during National Vocations Week, we celebrate the spirit of Mary MacKillop, who as an Australian sister, chose to make a difference to the society in which she lived in the 19th Century. The feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop is celebrated on the anniversary of her death (8/8/1909). We will celebrate the Feast Day on Tuesday 8 August with a lunch for all students and families in the MacKillop House.

National Trees Day |
Last Friday, 250 students from across Tenison Woods College participated in National Trees Day. A range of native trees were planted on Aston Fields and along the White Avenue boundary by students in the Primary School under the watchful guidance of Middle School Enviro Leaders and Year 11 Religion Students. National Trees Day happens each year in July and the college has participated for the past three years. In fact, on National Trees Day three years ago, the planting for the Craitbul Indigenous Garden on our Shepherdson Road entrance took place and is now very well established and regularly used by classes.
The day aims to educate students of the importance of caring for their local environment and gives them an opportunity to get their hands dirty in the process. Each year, we are fortunate to partner with Noel Barr Toyota who supply us with tree guards and stakes as well as t-shirts and gloves for the students. Additionally, thank you to the teachers who involved their classes in the activity and the students for their efforts.
If this day sounds like something your child would enjoy, why not plant a pot of herbs for your windowsill or a small vegetable plot in your backyard. You only need soil, sun and a sprinkle of water. It's a great way to spend time together and learn about healthy eating and the environment at the same time. You might enjoy the process even more than the product!

Book Week 2017: Get ready for the Escape to Everywhere Parade |
Friday 25 August (Week 5) - 9.00am in the Barrie Holmes Stadium. ELCC – Year 7.
Book Week 2017 asks your children to ‘Escape to Everywhere’; an exciting invitation with a world full of possibilities. One of the greatest joys of reading, for children and adults alike, is the opportunity to escape! Delve into our guide of ideas with your child to help decide their Book Week costume: will they escape to the past, a fantasy land or perhaps even another universe?
Escape to… the skies!
What better way to escape than to be the pilot of your own aircraft! The possibilities are endless; grab your pilot hat and fly away to an exotic island or perhaps even Antarctica!
Escape to… the past!
Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in the prehistoric era, amongst the dinosaurs? This book week you can find out! Grab your best dinosaur outfit or skip brushing your hair to be the perfect caveman. Other historical characters perfect for book week include Vikings, queens or knights in shining (or alfoil!) armour.
Escape to… Neverland!
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…Peter Pan! This Disney favourite is the perfect character to escape with this book week; easily recreated with tights and some green apparel. Or perhaps adorable fairy Tinkerbell is more your cup of tea – or Captain Hook!
Escape to… Mars!
Escape to another planet by dressing up as an astronaut! An alien or even a rocket could be other excellent space escape options.
Escape to… fantasy!
Don’t fancy time or space travel? Why not escape to a fantasy world and transform into a unicorn, an elf or fairy for book week!
With the magic of books comes endless possibilities! Where will Escape to Everywhere Book Week 2017 take you?

2017 Careers Evening at Mount Gambier TAFE |
This year the Rotary Careers Expo is offering a Careers Evening on Thursday 10 August from 6.00pm - 7:30pm at the Mount Gambier TAFE Campus. The evening is for all age groups from Year 9-12, and for parents and students to gain information about tertiary studies, Centrelink information and the Defence Force. This is the main information session for families to find out about these topics. We would appreciate it if parents could contact project coordinator Camille Clark for numbers via email. Support from the College is essential for this event so that South East students and their families can be informed about this in the future.
Students interested in attending workshops at the expo will need to inform their homegroup teachers or contact Camille to book in for any of the following workshops:
- Early Childhood
- Nursing
- Allied Health
- Cookery
Year 10 students will be attending the expo between 9.00am-11.30am and Year 9 students between 11.30am and 1.20pm on Friday 11 August.
Year 9 & 10 students will receive permission forms this week and will work through the brochure with their home group teachers in preparation for the Expo and also for the Subject Pathways Expo held at the College in Week 3.
It is important that families start discussing interest areas and have a broad range of ideas that could possibly be the future direction for students to take.
Please click here to see the timetable.
