From The Principal

Welcome to new families – and an Invitation to SHINE

As I welcome all families back to start second term for 2021, we especially welcome new families to our community, hoping that they will enjoy being a part of our learning family.  Furthermore, I trust new students will richly experience our way of being at the college where:

  • Every learner has a place.
  • Every learner has a pathway.
  • Every learner will shine.

This is our challenge and our celebration.

Within this way of being a College Family we understand that we are all learners and all teachers, where the dignity of all is of paramount importance.

Easter joy and Easter Eggs

From Easter Sunday we are in the season of Easter for 50 days which gives us abundant time to celebrate the JOY of Easter.  At one Easter Egg per day that makes …

ANZAC Day – ‘Lest we forget’

I was delighted that Tenison Woods College was formally involved in the Mount Gambier ANZAC Day commemorations. I believe ANZAC Day not only offers us an opportunity to acknowledge those Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who fought and died at Gallipoli in 1915, but is also a day of remembrance for all soldiers who have died while fighting for their country as well as their families whose lives have been significantly transformed by the supreme sacrifice.  Furthermore, ANZAC Day invites us as a community to acknowledge the commitment of our contemporary armed forces and their families; a day to say thank you with deep appreciation.

Tenison Woods College was represented at the Mount Gambier Dawn Service by Sari Mutton (School Wellbeing Leader) and Riley Turnbull (School Captain). Our College Captain, Tess Kenseley was isolating due to COVID-19 protocols, and as such Sari read the text about Reverend Arthur White, a Church of England clergyman and padre, 44th Battalion, First Australian Imperial Force, and his first ever observance of a Dawn Service on ANZAC Day on 25th April 1923, at Albany Western Australia.  Riley and Sari also laid a wreath on behalf of the College community.

College Junior School Leaders, Emmy Jeffrey and Louis Fritsche, and Middle School Leaders Chelsea Lucas and Mason Bentley represented the College community at the Mid-morning ANZAC Day Service at the Vansittart Park Cenotaph.  It was also wonderful to see so many other students present at the service, representing a variety of other service groups.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We shall remember them.

Staffing News

As we welcome back Tanina Morrone from Long Service Leave we also acknowledge a range of staffing situations.

Leave in term 2

As we commence this term, I also recognise Ali Tucker (Long Service Leave), Kaitlin Egan (Maternity), Nada Brookes (Long service leave), Sharon Brodie (Personal Health Leave), will all take varying leave approaches during this term.  We wish all these staff the very best for their leave.

New staff and new roles

We welcome Brooke Hicks and Chloe Perryman, who will cover Kaitlyn Egan’s role from this term.
We wish these new staff all the best in their service of our families, and look forward to them offering their gifts to the staff team.

We also wish Fiona Zwar all the best as she assumes the Catholic Identity and Mission Support role from the start of this term.

We say farewell to Susan Button and Natalie Chiesa after 3.5 years of offering their wonderful expertise to our College Community at our onsite Uniform Shop.  We thank Susan and Natalie for their dedicated, family centred, proactive service and wish them the best of luck in their next chapter in life.

We also warmly welcome our new Uniform Shop staff, Kylie Watson & Alana Creek, who have now started their new roles, continuing the dedicated commitment to our College families.  Be sure to stop by to say hi to Kylie & Alana!

Congratulations

We congratulate Nicola Harradine, who married Jamie Dunn in the holidays.  We wish Nicola and Jamie Dunn all the best in their marriage together.

HHDL Four Point Plan

Following on from my email to families last week I reiterate the new settings for schools, which will complement our continuing deliberate and careful HHDL Strategy in term 2.

  1. Masks will continue to be required to be worn by year 7-12 students, staff and adults indoors. Masks are also strongly encouraged for Years 3-6 students.
  2. Asymptomatic close contacts will no longer be required to quarantine. They will instead be required to take five Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) over seven days and wear a mask when leaving home. To access free RATs, close contacts must register here and nominate on the form the collection point from which they will collect a free pack of RATs.
  3. Close contacts who develop symptoms are still required to get a PCR test and isolate until a negative result is received.
  4. Parents are permitted to enter school grounds and classrooms. Though parent meetings/events may generally resume as usual, schools should continue to hold parent meetings/events online where this can reasonably occur (such as for most parent teacher interviews).

I thank you in anticipation for your attention to HHDL Four Point Plan; good health, good hygiene and hand washing, good distancing and care for others and good learning regardless of student location.

During term 2, the health and wellbeing of students, families and staff remain our priority. We will continue to ensure that our school is a safe environment, maintaining the additional cleaning regime, which was commenced in 2020, accentuating natural ventilation, minimising movement and visitors within the school, and maintaining Subschool delineation as much as is possible to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission across the College community

Masks on Buses

We reiterate to families the expectation that 7-12 students wear protective masks on buses.  Younger children are encouraged to wear masks to offer optimum protection in the confined bus space.

Need a tutor? Studiosity is our free online tutoring service

I remind families that students of Tenison Woods College in years 7-12 have access to a free online tutoring service.  Students are able to connect to expert tutors for live, one-to-one conversations about homework, assignments and exam preparation from 3:00pm – 10:00pm Monday to Friday. Give it a try – I know you will appreciate the service offered by Studiosity!

NAPLAN 2022

As previously advised students in Years 3,5,7, and 9 will be undertaking 4 NAPLAN tests during Weeks 2 and 3 of this term. Please avoid making any external appointments during this time for your child.

NAPLAN tests are constructed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills they have learnt over time through the school curriculum, and NAPLAN test days should be treated as just another routine event on the school calendar. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program and to advise them to simply do the best they can on the day.

If you are new to the testing demonstration tests are available at the following site if you wish to increase your familiarity with the type of questions asked. https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

Any concerns or questions should be directed to your child’s Home Group teacher or directly to me as Online Assessment Coordinator at lloyc@tenison.catholic.edu.au

Please contact your child’s HG teacher with any queries or concerns.

Chris Lloyd  |  Online Assessment Coordinator
