Remembrance Day – Saturday 11 November
Remembrance Day is an opportunity for us to pay tribute to those men and women who have given their lives in the service of our country. As part of the College tribute, our Year 7 students will attend the Remembrance Day service at the War Memorial in Canberra, and our 2018 College School Captains, Evangelia Wichmann and Daniel Ker, will lay a wreath at the Mount Gambier service at Vansittart Park.
Such commemoration helps us reflect on events that have shaped our history and on the lives that have been impacted by the will of others. As we reflect on those who have offered themselves for the cause of freedom, let us not forget the part our faith can play in bringing peace to our world.

During the month of November, Tenison Woods College is going to be hosting a Nude Food awareness month.
Reception through to Year 5 Classes have been allocated a day, with the option of being involved in ordering a ‘Healthy Snack Box’ to enjoy at 12 o’clock fruit break. Available on the day will be a range of snacks for children to choose, including but not limited to: Fresh fruit chunks, vegetable sticks, mini fruit muffins, flatbread pinwheels with hummus and salad, crackers and cheese. Gluten free options will also be available.
How to become involved:
There will be a $5.00 cost to take part in the Healthy Snack Meal Deal. Permission Notes have been sent home, if you did not receive one, please contact the college on 8725 5455. Jacob came first in his triple jump event which has qualified him to attend the Australian Championships held in Adelaide from 8-10 December, 2017. This three day festival is the Australian Athletics development pathway and features athletes in under 14, under 16 and under 18. Hannah will also be competing at these Championships after finishing 1st in her 2km steeple chase and 3rd with a personal best time in the 3km run. An amazing effort from two very talented students!

Poppy Fundraiser for Legacy a success |
With remembrance day this Saturday 11 November, Year 5 students Paige Exelby, Chelsea Ryan and Cara Nulty have shown wonderful compassion and initiative to raise money for Legacy, by selling hand-made Poppies.
Paige Exelby comments, “I was inspired by my family members who had returned from various wars, and listening to their stories. I decided to use the idea of poppies as a way to honour and thank them and so many others. My grandma and grandpa and their kind friends helped me to make this possible. I have also had some lovely friends, that have helped me sell the poppies.”
These wonderful poppies were sold to Staff and Students for $2.00 each. The students were also supported by class teacher Bec Higgins.
The Red Poppy is a symbol of remembrance to commemorate Australian soldiers who died in war. The Purple Poppy commemorates animal victims of war.
A total of $297.55 was raised. We congratulate the girls for this wonderful gesture, and the funds will be well received by the Legacy charity.

One of the aims of the music faculty at Tenison Woods College is to help our music students to shine. This year, twelve of our students ranging from Year 6 to Year 10 took on the challenge of joining the South East Primary School's Music Festival Orchestra, making up a total of 52 musicians for this group. As the conductor for the event again this year, I opened up the invitation never expecting so many responses from our budding musicians.
The festival has now been running in the South East for 30 years - we celebrated its birthday at this year’s event. Although the focus is on the choirs on stage, the work of the orchestra is a massive undertaking. Starting rehearsals in July, we had one a month leading up to the festival week in October. It is expected of the musicians to learn their music with their teachers away from orchestra, and every year they succeed!

How much do we need to tell our children?
Do our children need to know explicit details about relationship breakdowns, disability or themselves?
We seem to have created a culture where discussing these often complex issues is done openly and in great detail. Perhaps this is reflective of the greater transparency we see in the world today, with personal information being shared on social media and reality TV. Our society has evolved to favour transparency in most aspects of life. It seems to be the new norm but is it in the best interests of our children’s wellbeing, that our parenting follows suit?
