The past month has been a very busy time for our vocal and instrumental students as well as our choirs and ensembles, many of whom participated in the Mount Gambier Choral and Vocal Eisteddfod and also the Mount Gambier Music Eisteddfod.
In the Choral sections, we were very proud of the way in which our students participated. Our Music Connection (Year 6/7 choir) in particular have shown rapid improvement especially in their performance skills. The results for our choirs were Music Connection (2 x 1st), Concert Choir (1st), Senior Vocal Ensemble (3rd).
Our ensembles also performed with distinction and should be very proud of their efforts. Due to the limited number of sections, often our ensembles are competing against each other and do so with good humour and excellent support. The results for our ensembles are Big Band (1st), Concert Band (2nd), Saxophone Quartet (2nd), Storm Drum Corps (3rd), Guitar Ensemble (1st), Thunder Drum Corps (1st), Woodwind Ensemble (1st), Year 6 band (2nd), Year 7 Band (1st). Congratulations to all staff and students involved.
In the individual sections, we again had a large number of Tenison Woods College students participating. A huge congratulations to Ben Langford (Year 10) who was successful in winning the Majella Wines Scholarship. Congratulations also to Year 9 students, Dylan Leadbetter and Emily Hanel who were successful in winning their heats to compete in the Majella Wines Scholarship. Congratulations to Matthew Leadbetter (Year 8) who won the Backstage Incorporated Junior Brass Scholarship and Vincent Van Eyk (Year 6) who won the Backstage Incorporated Junior Percussion Scholarship.

It has been a busy time for our Performing Arts students and staff. Firstly, we celebrate the success of Ellyana and the Rock Band students.
The Music Faculty under the passionate commitment of Bec Hudson were piloting a music writing and production program with great success this year. One significant outcome as a result of the program, and beyond the program was the launch on Saturday night of Ellyana Sims’ music CD.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge all staff who have supported and encouraged a wonderfully talented and self-motivated student, along with her family and Year 9 students Ethan Herpich, Rosie Van Eyk, Ruben Gustavsson, Year 8 student Emma O’Callaghan and Year 10 student Aimee Black. As was witnessed by their showcase of talent and performance during the evening, we are excited about the prospects for their future in music. Congratulations to Bec Hudson, Nathan Creedy, Marie Holmes and Harry Van Eyk with the support of Beth Creedy and the Performing Arts staff.
It was fantastic to see Taylor Pearson as the support act, and also our Hospitality students who supported the caterers throughout the evening.
I was also delighted to hear of the success of students at the Music Eisteddfods last week with several students achieving personal bests, especially Ben Langford who was successful in winning the Majella Wines Scholarship. Congratulations to all involved!

Migrant and Refugee Sunday
Pope Francis has chosen the theme, “Child Migrants, the Vulnerable and the Voiceless”, for the 103rd World Day of Migrants and Refugees, commemorated in Australia this coming Sunday.
Pope Francis reminds us that, “Migration today is not a phenomenon limited to some areas of the planet. It affects all continents and is growing into a tragic situation of global proportions. Not only does this concern those looking for dignified work or better living conditions, but also men and women, the elderly and children, who are forced to leave their homes in the hope of finding safety, peace and security.” (Pope Francis, Message 2017)
Tenison Woods College Year 8 students have created ‘Welcome’ banners to be hung in each of the Churches in the South East this Sunday.

Lucy Williams in the Running for Youth Forum |
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Lucy Williams, who has been shortlisted for the ABC Trailblazers Program, which supports young innovators in regional Australia to attend a week long forum in Canberra in February. Lucy was interviewed by the Heywire Executive Producer and an ABC Trailblazer Producer last week and was selected as one of 30 young people on their list. Music Rock Band Success |
The EP, ‘Ellyana – My Own Race’ was officially launched at the Main Corner last Saturday evening! This was the culmination of months of hard work by many students – Ellyana Sims, Ethan Herpich, Aimee Black, Ruben Gustavsson, Emma O’Callaghan and Rosie Van Eyk. These student have put in a huge amount of work to write, learn and record four original songs. This was part of a pilot program of composing and recording which will lead into a semester unit at Tenison Woods College for Year 9 music students, beginning in 2018. The introduction of the program was inspired by Ellyana’s original compositions (some in conjunction with the band). Vocal teacher Tamara Seeley and Music Teacher, Rebecca Hudson have worked closely with the students for many months and together with the Sims family, Tenison Woods College and community support, we were able to support these students to produce an EP that they are all proud of.
This project was also supported by Nathan Creedy, Harry Van Eyk and Marie Holmes along with the rest of the Music Faculty. Students have also worked with the SongMakers Program who helped support them in writing their original compositions. These students along with the Year 8 Rockbands and Year 9 Rockband have travelled to Melbourne this week as part of our inaugural Rock Band Tour to participate in performances and workshops with the Australian Institute of Music.
Congratulations to all staff and students involved in this exciting project.

Open Basketball State Championships |
On Tuesday 15 August the Tenison Woods College open boys’ and girls’ basketball teams travelled to Adelaide to compete in the State Championships. This was a huge event for the Titans Basketball Academy with both College teams placed to do well against the top six schools in South Australia.
Both teams started the day with tough losses to Henley High School but this did not dampen their spirits. The boys and girls found success in their second game. The boys getting the win against St. Peters Adelaide, with Malok Makoi and Zac Dewitt leading the way. The girls dominated Mercedes Girls School, on the back of a great performance from Olivia Fuller and Emily Close.
After the third game of the pool competition, both teams qualified for the semi-finals, achieving our goal as a group and cementing Tenison Woods College as one of the elite basketball programs in the State.
The boys would lose the semi-final by 17 points to eventual champions Trinity College in a tough loss that the boys will learn a lot from. Coach Stevenson said, “Well that’s where we are in the pecking order at the moment and we have to get used to playing tough grind-it-out games. I am very proud with the boy’s effort and pride in the singlet, we just have to work harder in preparation for next year”.
The girls came out with their best performance of the tournament defeating Emmauel College in the semi-final with clinical defence. In the final the girls again battled against Henley High. Although the girls played hard, they could not find enough to get over the top of a very classy Henley High team, but overall it was a fantastic result. Coach Stratford stated, “I’m really proud of the girls and the determination that they have shown throughout the tournament. From a College perspective its massive to keep us on the map nationally.
Coach Stevenson would like to thank everyone for their help through the week and wishes every athlete the best in future endeavours.
