September 8 - The Nativity of Our Lady

September 8 is the liturgical celebration of the Nativity of Our Lady, the celebration of the birthday of Mary who was born like all of us and lived with her family. To celebrate the Nativity of Mary is to honour Jesus too. Pope Francis says, “Mary guides us toward the path we are called to take and shares with us that Mary taught us what it means to be a disciple of Christ, while she was 'eternally chosen to be his Mother.' She also learned how to be his disciple and be of service to others.” On September 8 we thank God for the gift of life, and give honour to both Mary and Jesus—remembering that God has created each person with love and with a call to something very special in life.

Staff Formation Day – 7 September (Student Free Day)

Our Staff Formation Day will be held in Mount Gambier on Friday 7 September 2018 (Student Free Day). The facilitator for the day is Rev Dr Michael Trainor, a priest in the Archdiocese of Adelaide and lecturer at the Australian Catholic University. Dr Trainor will present on what it means to be a Catholic educator, what draws each individual to education, the presence of God in our life and reflection time on the importance of our roles in Catholic schools.

All three Catholic schools in the region will participate in this day; consequently, an important aspect of the day is reconnecting with or meeting others who share the same mission for education.

Parents Night Out

I had the pleasure of attending the PTA (Parent Teachers Association) “Parents Night Out”. An opportunity for parents and staff to gather informally and engage in the learnings from the wonderful guest speaker Dr. Justin Coulson.  Coulson is one of Australia's leading Psychologists and experts in the areas of parenting, relationships and wellbeing, with the presentation focusing on his expertise with parenting issues and concerns.

The session was very beneficial, and provided the opportunity for further discussion amongst the attendees.

Thank you to Aleathia Holland and our wonderful PTA volunteers who organised the evening and creating this opportunity for staff and parents to gather together. For further information regarding the Tenison Woods College PTA and how to become involved, please visit our website.

Father’s Day Breakfast

What a beautiful morning this was as Fathers, Grandfathers, Uncles and significant males gathered to celebrate Father’s Day. Guests enjoyed a bacon and egg roll, some juice and coffee while spending some quality time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Thank you to the staff that volunteered their time to yet again make this such a great event. Three hundred and fifty bacon and egg rolls were served – a stellar effort from the Catholic, Identity and Mission team and the Sugarloaf Café Staff.

Greatest Wax – Blokes Wax for Bowel Cancer

Following the Father’s Day Breakfast, the College prepared to host The Greatest Wax – Blokes Wax for Bowel Cancer.

Led by our wonderful Year 12 College Captains Evangelia and Daniel, and supported by the Year 12 cohort, a huge $3,784 was raised. The money raised will assist with early detection of Bowel Cancer.

Thank you to staff, students, local business, and the donation of time (and wax) by Little Birdy Medispa for this cause.

Congratulations and well done, to all involved.

STEMtember

I am personally very excited to have attended a number of the first STEMtember events at the College! What a wonderful opportunity for Tenison Woods College students this has been so far. Students collaborating to solve problems, engineer creative solutions, and combining not only the elements of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths but also other subjects from across the curriculum. Overall, the students have enjoyed a fantastic time, creating and experimenting.

I encourage parents/carers to talk with their child/ren, asking them about STEMtember and how they can get involved every lunchtime from now until the end of the month.

See STEMtember feature in this newsletter for a full calendar as well as gallery of photos from the events held so far.
