Tenison Woods College Year 12 student Courtney De Barro has recently returned from America after competing in this year’s International Tetrathlon Exchange. Athletes compete in four disciplines – a 3km cross-country run, 200m swim, 10m air pistol and horse show jumping.
Courtney was selected to represent Australia after her performance at the Australian National Championships in early February. “After going to nationals, my state coach encouraged me to apply and said I had a good chance to make it”. Once selected, the training began as she prepared for the four-sport event. “I ran everyday once I got selected, swam four times a week, shot two times a week and also rode my horse every chance I got” Courtney said.
The bi-annual event was this year held in Tryon, North Carolina. Through her time at the Championships Courtney had the opportunity to not only visit, but stay on campus at some of the most popular universities in North America, including North Carolina State and Queens University. She spent the first two weeks participating in activities with athletes from other countries, whilst also competing in mini-competitions in the lead up to the main event.
Overall, Courtney finished 14th in the world while the Australian girls team came in 3rd.
When talking to Courtney after the event she said “I had a lot of fun, made new friends and had the opportunity to compete at the highest level and improve overall.”
Congratulations to Courtney De Barro on her success and wish her well as she pursues her love for the tetrathlon competition in the future.
