The last two days of Term Two provided students from Mount Gambier High School and Tenison Woods College the opportunity to participate in a collaborative learning experience.
The Music Identity Project was funded by the Multicultural Education Languages Committee (MELC) and the following description is from the program overview.
“Music concepts, musical cultures and audio technology become both objects of study and a means of personal and social reflections on identity”.
MELC works collaboratively with educational and community organisations towards ensuring that education for all students is enriched by the value of engagement with linguistic and cultural diversity and that children learn to operate with sophistication and ease with diverse people.
During the two days, students had the opportunity to reflect on the music and their identity, creating a play list that became a soundtrack for the project.
Dance and movement were also part of the workshops and students enjoyed choreographing dances which culminated in a dance off.
Two facilitators delivered the workshops with the students. Phil van Hout a South Australian sound artist, sound designer, sound engineer, radio producer and announcer and Lisa Burns who has worked in radio for nine years, including as a journalist for the national community radio current affairs program, The Wire; producing sound recordings with Aboriginal communities in Alice Springs and as relief news reader for ABC South East SA.
MGHS, TWC and STTARS staff members supported the 20 students in their music identity journey.
Students and staff enjoyed this cross sector project and acknowledge the generous funding received from MELC that made this valuable learning experience possible.
