Year 11 student Portia Holdman has recently returned from the National U/16 Football Championships held in Adelaide. While goal umpiring a series of preliminary rounds throughout the week-long carnival, her performances were rewarded. Portia was given the opportunity to umpire both the Grand Final between South Australia and Victoria and the consolation Grand final between Western Australia and Queensland. This was a unique and wonderful experience that has further inspired the local Western Border A Grade umpire. The 16-year-old commenced umpiring 3 years ago and her dedication, skill and enjoyment of goal umpiring has provided her many opportunities, culminating in the National carnival last week. Prior to this, Portia had been spotted by MSEFL executive member and local sporting identity Mr. Robert Halliday at the Interleague Zone Carnival where he approached Portia and sung her praises on her commitment as well as providing encouragement to pursue umpiring at a higher level. Impressed by her eagerness, Mr. Halliday organised a signed AFL shirt and an inspiring letter by AFL Goal umpire Chelsea Grossi, encouraging Portia to pursue her dream of reaching the AFL competition.
