Throughout Term 2, the Year 1 classes have been focusing on Fairy Tales.
As part of our reading program we have read a range of Fairy Tales, analysed and compared the characters, settings and plots.
During Writers Workshop we explored the narrative style features of Fairy Tales as well as other commonalities. Students were then encouraged to include these features in their own books.
On Friday of Week 9, our learning culminated in the annual Year 1 Fairy Tale Day, where students came dressed as their favourite Fairy Tale character.
We were able to see all the wonderful and creative costumes when the students participated in a mini parade. After this they were given a range of materials and asked to create something from a fairy tale. They had some amazing creations, from castles to baskets for little red riding hood to story settings which included forests, cottages and tiny characters.
After recess the students were given an opportunity to write their own Fairy Tale book – ensuring to incorporate an orientation, problem and resolution as well as ‘once upon a time’ and ‘happily ever after’ like we see in so many Fairy Tales.
The Year 1 Fairy Tale day was once again a fantastic day and we are already looking forward to next year!
