On Friday 22 June in week 8, over 200 Year 9 and 10 students from 8 schools across the Limestone Coast took part in the annual Newcastle University Science and Engineering Challenge, hosted by Tenison Woods College in the Barrie Holmes Stadium.
The Science and Engineering Challenge travels all over Australia and more than half a million students have participated nationwide. The local event was organised by Rotary, with support from sponsors including Kimberly-Clark, Forestry SA, City of Mount Gambier and District Council of Grant who provided funding and/or volunteers on the day to help run the activities.
The day gave students an opportunity for hands-on problem solving using STEM principles across a number of activities including bridge building, catapult tweaking, turbine optimising and coded message sending. Students were scored on their efforts and an aggregate calculated for the day.
Tenison Woods College came a creditable 3rd behind the winners Grant High School, but the whole day was a triumph of trial-and-error, problem solving and teamwork. Current year 8 and 9 students are encouraged to sign up when it comes around again next year.
