The Tenison Woods College year 8/9 Boys football team competed for the first time in round two of the 2018 knockout competition.
The 22 boys played in two games for the day. The first against Mount Gambier High School and the second against Naracoorte High.
In the first game, our new 2018 captains, Harry Tunkin and Harry McInnes won the toss from Mount Gambier High School and elected to kick with the wind. The game started with some messy play from both teams as the Vansittart Park oval was still wet from rains the night before. As the first quarter ended, the teams could only be separated by 8 points as Tenison Woods College kicked two goals, two behinds to the High School’s one goal.
After the quarter time break, the oval had dried up. The College boys began playing their style of football with Mitchell Sims and Harry Tunkin winning the ball out of the middle on many occasions. This free flowing style of play continued for the whole of the game which allowed our year 8/9 boys to walk away victorious with a final score of 8.7.55 to 1.1.7.
The College boys were only given a twenty-minute break before their second match against Naracoorte High School - The stronger of the two opponents.
The second game began very much in Naracoorte’s favor with their bigger bodied students stepping-up early to score the first goal of the game while keeping Tenison Woods College goalless in the first quarter.
As the second quarter started Tenison Woods College were down just 4 points. Harry McInnes’ game lifted, kicking both of Tenison’s goals in the second quarter. Oscar Adams also took it upon himself to make a major impact around the ground.
The second half was all Tenison Woods College as Billy Shanks and Ethan Bowman combined to take over the game off the half-back. This allowed the College boys to finish the game victorious, 6.7.43 to 3.6.24.
Best players on the day were Harry Tunkin, Mitchell Sims, Harry McInnes, Oscar Adams, Billy Shanks, Kade Varcoe and Ethan Bowman. Well done boys!
The College Year 8/9 Boys will now await their opponent to be decided for the state semifinal. That game will then determine who competes for the state championship later in term 3.
