Charity Day

20.06.18

On Thursday 14 June, the College held its first annual Charity Day, themed ‘Cans, Coins, Casuals for a Cause’.

The day was organised and led by our Year 12 students and sub-school council groups, taking on this year’s motto ‘Hands Up, Help Out’ as well as the Australian Bishop’s ‘Year of Youth’.

This day helped build student leadership through teamwork and allowed students to learn and grow while still enjoying fun activities. The event was planned to not only raise money and awareness for those less fortunate in our local area, but also to build a stronger school community, breaking the invisible bonds that exist between our school year levels.

We are very excited to announce that we raised $3,700, which will be donated to local charities, chosen by each sub-school:

  • South East Animal Welfare League (Junior School)
  • Headspace (Middle School)
  • Sunset Kitchen (Senior School)

Over 1,300 cans were also collected and donated locally to Vinnies.

The day began with a reflective Whole School Mass in the morning - celebrated by Fr Dean. During recess the sub-school council groups held food stalls for students, selling items such as jelly, sweet popcorn, honey crackles and cupcakes (themed to the founders/house colours).

Between Recess and Lunch, Year 12 activities were held in the Barrie Holmes Stadium. Activities were aimed at all year levels. They ranged from the Fastest Donut Eater, Throw a Sponge at a Teacher, Are You Smarter than a Twelfth Grader?, Henna Body Art, Face Painting, Basketball and Soccer shootouts, plus much more. Most activities were free of cost but a few required a gold coin for participation.

All teachers and staff were given the opportunity to visit the activities with their classes. Each class visited for 20 minutes during lessons 3-6 and from observation the activities were a success. The Barrie Holmes Stadium was filled with constant chatter, music and laughter from beginning to end.

By lunch time the delicious aroma of pizza, potato spirals, nachos, sausages, and freshly popped popcorn filled the school. The area was constantly filled with students from all ages, donating their money in exchange for delicious food. The food at lunch would not have been possible without the help provided by Lakes Rotary and Rotary West, The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden and the Sugarloaf Café, who we thank dearly for their help. We also thank Rotary Club Mount Gambier who are allowing us to man their BBQ over four weekends next month at the Rotary Market at Harvey Norman. For this work, they will be donating $1,000 to the cause, which will add to the $3,700 raised on the Charity Day.

The last two lessons of the day returned to normal, with the rain starting just after the end of lunch, concluding the day with a decent wash - similar to that of Mr Mezinec’s sponge throw session!

For this day to be possible there are a number of people we need to thank. Thank you to Mrs Sanderson, Ms Couzens, Staff Leadership, Sarah Edwards (faith leader), senior school council students, as well as the other sub school councils. Many thanks also need to go to teaching staff for their support and involvement during the day and the Year 12 students who continuously support us and who we couldn’t be more proud and thankful for - you are amazing!

The 2018 Charity Day took a lot of work and time, particularly as it was the first year. We hope that this day will develop in the coming years, with the support and drive of future College captains.

Thank you very much to parents/carers for all of your support during the day. We hope your children enjoyed it as much as we did and that the Tenison Woods College Charity Day continues well into the future.
