World Environment Day
Yesterday, 5 June, was World Environment Day. In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ passionate exhortation to care for the environment, he reminds us that the environment is not something outside ourselves that we have and with which we deal. We are part of the environment. When we speak of the environment we are speaking of ourselves. When we respect or exploit the environment, we are respecting or exploiting ourselves. When we safeguard or put at risk the future of the world, it is our own future and that of our children that we risk or protect.
World Environment Day reminds us that we cannot rescue the world from the consequences of global warming simply by better technology and clever solutions. Care for the environment demands a vision of one another and of the world as inextricably linked so that we take personally the exploitation of the environment and of vulnerable people. This vision calls for a conversion from competition to cooperation, from exploitation to respect, from disregard to attentiveness, and from greed to thankfulness.
Founder’s Week and Whole School Mass
Next week we celebrate the Founders of our College. There is a Whole School Mass at 9.00am on Thursday 14 June in the Barrie Holmes Stadium which we would love to see many parents, carers and family in attendance.
On Wednesday and Friday, all students will have the opportunity to attend a house level celebration at either recess or lunchtime on one of the days. Please see the Founders Week flyer in the newsletter for further information about the celebrations.
Watoto Children’s Choir
On Thursday 26 July we are excited to be hosting the Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda in Mount Gambier. The choir, whose members are vulnerable children and orphans, present worship music from Watoto Church, in Uganda. Through the power of testimony, the children share stories of how their lives have changed and their call into a life of purpose. Through song, dance, and storytelling the children proclaim the good news. Tenison Woods College families will act as hosts for the 36 Choir members. Nine host homes are needed to host these beautiful children and Ugandan Aunties/Uncles. The billet groups are split up into groups of 3 or 4 individuals, including an Aunty or Uncle; ie 2 or 3 children and 1 adult per house.
The free concert will be held at 7:00pm at St Paul’s Church and will go for approximately an hour. We will be providing the choir with a meal before the concert in the St Paul’s Hall and donations of a sweet or savoury plate are needed. Please contact Michelle Coote if you are able to host a small group for the night or can assist with the catering or serving at the dinner from 5.30pm.
