Catholic Education Week May 25 - June 1

Catholic schools have been educating students in South Australia since the 1860s and today 20% of South Australia's students attend a Catholic school with 6000 staff teaching 48,000 students.

Our Catholic schools are much more than simply places where children learn Maths, Science, English or Geography. While we take great pride in doing that with excellence, we do much more. We also teach more than simply social justice values, care for the environment and compassion for humanity. While these are all critical to a well-rounded development of our young, there is still much more which sets us apart from other school communities.

Critically, our Catholic schools are places for our students, our teachers and their families to experience the love of God revealed to us in the person of Jesus Christ, and lived out in His body, which is the Church. So in essence, Catholic Education Week in South Australia is an opportunity for us to celebrate the way we are hope-filled communities; communities in which each person is invited to a deep relationship with our God and expresses that relationship by the way they serve one another and our broader global community.

Regional Youth Mass to Celebrate the ‘Year of Youth’

It is fitting that the Regional Youth Mass in Penola this Sunday 27 May will take place during Catholic Education Week. The two events accentuate the relationships which are at the heart of our service to youth and families. Young and old from across the South East will gather in St Joseph’s Church, Penola at 5.00pm for a mass to celebrate the ‘Year of Youth’. We look forward to this gathering of young people and those who would like to pray for and celebrate youth. Members of our College community are welcome to attend. The Mass will be followed by a shared tea at 6.00pm.

2018 Shining Light Recipients Announced

The Friends of Tenison Woods College (Old Scholars Association) is very pleased to announce the five 2018 ‘Shining Light’ award recipients.

The Shining Light awards aim to recognise significant contributions made by former students, families or staff to our local and global community in order to inspire current and future students about the essence of our community and their call to service.

Tenison Woods College and its predecessors, St Paul’s School, Tenison College, Marist Brothers Agricultural College, Mater Christi College, St Mary’s School and St Joseph’s College value the contributions of all community members, past and present and we think it’s important to recognise some of the standout achievements within the community.

Our 2018 Shining Lights are:

  • Alan Balshaw - Marist Brothers Agricultural College, 1968
  • Anthony Casadio - Marist Brothers Agricultural College, 1963
  • Sally Duigan - Mater Christi College, 1966
  • Jeanette Elliott - Mater Christi College, 1965
  • Jenna McCormick - Tenison Woods College, 2010

Keep an eye out for further details on this year’s recipients as they are released over the next few weeks.

We look forward to presenting the Shining Light awards on Saturday 27 October, 2018 at the Commodore on the Park. We welcome friends of Tenison Woods College; past scholars since the inception of Marist Agricultural College or the Convent of Mercy, parents of former scholars, past staff members, past volunteers, in fact anyone who is proud to be or have been associated with Catholic Education in the Limestone Coast. More details to follow, but for now lock this date in your diary, let your old school friends know and get along!

Aussie Camino Pilgrims Welcomed by our Students

Recently, Year 4 students Jahli Mutton, Maggie Collins and Bonnie de Nys welcomed a group of Aussie Camino pilgrims from Queensland as they travelled towards Penola during the April school holidays. On hearing the pilgrims were passing the residence of one of the students, they organised morning tea to offer the pilgrims. The pilgrims have shared with us this information through a letter forwarded to the school. In the spirit of celebrating the example of Bonnie, Maggie and Jahli, I am honoured to share the letter forwarded to the College by one of the participants of the pilgrim.

Parent Teacher interviews

I thank parents, students and staff for their commitment to last week’s parent teacher interviews. At Tenison Woods College, we appreciate deeply that every learner has a place, every learner has a pathway, every learner will shine. I hope the interviews assisted in building connections between families and the College, while also providing an opportunity to celebrate the development achieved so far and how the individual student is part of our Tenison Woods College family.

Staff Professional Development Days – 7 and 8 June

Staff are looking forward to the staff professional development days on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 June, when they will look at two specific areas:

Wellbeing and Resilient Futures -  with the support of SAHMRI
Our Whole School Action Research Project, informed by workshops conducted by Rowena Ulbricht that will consider 21st Century Learning Design – self-regulation and knowledge.

I trust the community will experience the benefits of these days through our service to students and families throughout the College. I remind families that these are student-free days and our out of school hours care service will be available to support families.

Carpark Care

I remind families of the care required in the carpark area. The speed limit of 15km / hour is designed to assist with maintaining the safety of all community members, particularly those walking and riding bikes to school. Please keep in mind that the one metre distance between car and bike still applies within the school grounds.

The smooth running of the ‘kiss and drop’ area depends on the courtesy of all users to keep the traffic moving. Should children not be at the ‘kiss and drop’ area ready for pick up, I ask parents to complete another cycle of the area to ensure others can collect their waiting children.
