August is Open Season!

17.05.18

The majority of South Australian and Victorian universities and colleges hold their Open Days during August. Visiting a university, TAFE or College on one of the student Open Days or information events is an excellent opportunity to seek the answers to all the questions you have about your future study plans.

Attending an Open Day will enable you to:

  • Become familiar with the Campus; consider how the campus feels, its location, on-campus accommodation options, or travel times if living off-campus, facilities, and social options.
  • Gather information; find out about degrees, diplomas or courses of interest, study options and pathways, available scholarships, accommodation and living costs, clubs and societies, student life and campus tours.
  • Talk to people; this is a great opportunity to talk to current and past students, academic and administrative staff.
  • Experience and enjoy; attend lectures and demonstrations, interactive and immersive activities, listen to live music and performances.

A few tips to make the most of your Open Day experience:

Get there early

  • Firstly, there will be a lot to cover and secondly, you’ll be jostling for space and air time with hundreds of other potential students. In a nutshell, things get busy so best to get there early to make the most of your time.

Wear comfortable walking shoes

  • Campuses can cover a huge area so you need to be prepared for a long day of walking and standing as you explore what is on offer. Be prepared for all kinds of weather too.

Follow your plan of action as much as possible

  • Before you go, ensure you actually have a plan of action. Try to follow the most important points on your plan to ensure these are covered. There can be a great deal going on with musical entertainment, performers, free food, clubs, tours and information hubs which can be distracting. Know your questions and what you want to cover and have answered. Download a map of the campus ahead of time and familiarise yourself.

Locate sources of information

  • Your key objective is to locate and obtain information related to your preferred areas of study and career pathways of interest. You will also want to know about facilities, clubs, social activities, accommodation options, study and living costs. Take advantage of the academic and administrative staff on hand and ask questions – lots of them! Even better, go equipped with all the questions you want answered.

Experience the inside of a Lecture Theatre or Classroom

  • This is, after all, where part or much of your learning may take place. As some lecture theatres can be quite large, it may help to sit in one, or even better attend an actual lecture or seminar being delivered (especially one connected to your area of interest).
