On Friday 2 March, students of all ages took part in this year’s Clean Up Australian Schools Day. This event is a significant day on the school calendar and engages almost all of our community, demonstrating in force this year’s “Hand Up, Help Out” message.
Students collected litter from the College grounds and surrounding areas. In total, close to half a million square metres were covered, including Shepherdson Road, Marist Park, the west section of the Railway lands, St Paul's and more. In total, a mammoth 1.7 tonnes of waste was collected and removed from our region! This astounding figure is more than triple the weight collected in last year’s record breaking 540kg haul. The amount of waste was so much that the Mount Gambier City Council was called in to bring a 5-tonne truck to clear away additional rubbish!
A special mention must go to Year 10 students, Dylan Leadbetter, Lachie Price, and Lachlan Walker for their leadership in the running of the weigh-in station. Also Micki Greenham’s Year 9 class who hauled the biggest amount of waste – collecting close to 400 kilograms alone!
A sincere thank you to all staff and students involved in the day - especially considering the engagement of students across the College, the efficiency of the weigh in area, and the duty of care that was provided on and off site.
