During the recent summer holidays, members of the Tenison Woods College community embarked on a trip all the way to the United Arab Emirates for Abu Dhabi’s ‘Sustainability Week’. The trip revolved around the Zayed Future Energy Prize, an international competition where schools share their unique projects involving renewable energy technology. Five successful schools from around the globe would receive the $100,000US prize, contributing to sustainability projects within their school communities.
Tenison Woods College was recognised for their efforts in the area of sustainability and three members of the College community were invited to Abu Dhabi. Student Enviro leader Dylan Leadbetter, Sustainability Coordinator Tom Linnell and College Board Member Jean-Claude Cesario represented the College and were all amazed at the innovative ways the United Arab Emirates were implementing sustainability into their everyday practices. The 8-day trip involved highlights such as the opening ceremony of Abu Dhabi’s Sustainability Week, a visit to Masdar City, a desert safari, a visit to the world only 7-star hotel, and the close relationships that were formed with the schools from across the globe.
Although Tenison Woods College was not ultimately the recipient of the major prize, the team intends to build on the experience and further the College’s awareness and action in the areas of sustainability and student leadership.
