One of the aims of the music faculty at Tenison Woods College is to help our music students to shine. This year, twelve of our students ranging from year 6 to year 10 took on the challenge of joining the South East Primary Schools Music Festival Orchestra making up a total of 52 musicians for this group. As the conductor for the event again this year, I opened up the invitation never expecting so many responses from our budding musicians.
The festival has now been running in the South East for 30 years - we celebrated its birthday at this year’s event. Although the focus is on the choirs on stage, the work of the orchestra is a massive undertaking. Starting rehearsals in July, we had one a month leading up to the festival week in October. It is expected of the musicians to learn their music with their teachers away from orchestra, and every year they succeed!
Festival week (Term 4 – Week 2) involved a 4-hour rehearsal on the Sunday with the soloists followed by an intense week at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre with rehearsals on the Monday – Thursday and concerts on the Tuesday – Friday night. Musicians were encouraged to go to as many as they could. Students went back and forth to school and so thanks definitely must go to the parents who helped make this happen and the teachers who accommodated it in their classrooms.
This event allowed students to shine within our community as they played alongside fellow community members and students from other schools. Friendships were formed and instrumental technique and performance blossomed. It was wonderful, as their conductor, to watch the change occur over the 4 months as we met up each rehearsal. Please congratulate the following students for their commitment, resilience and success in taking part in this experience:
Alina Crispino (Year 6 – Violin); Alexa Balog (Year 7 – Clarinet); Hunter Elliott (Year 7 – Trombone); Michael Galpin (Year 7 – Clarinet); Bryce Hammond (Year 7 – Trombone); Ethan Hopgood (Year 7 – Alto Saxophone); Lilah Lamb (Year 7 – Trumpet); Jordan Stephens (Year 7 – Trumpet); Reuben van Eyk (Year 7 – Flute); Daisy Yates (Year 7 – Violin); Alice Circelli (Year 8 – Violin); Ben Langford (Year 10 – Clarinet)
