In 2017, a Year 8/9 Girls division has been added to the SSSSA Knockout Football competition in South Australia. Tenison Woods College entered a team into the 8/9 category and the girls played their first two matches on Tuesday 23 May in Keith. They made a great start to the season with two straight wins against Glossop High School and Murray Bridge High School, both played at Keith Football Oval.
Apart from participating in 9-A-Side carnivals, the girls were reasonably new to football. However, they appeared to be well accustomed to the sport when they hit the field on Tuesday. The skill, determination and athleticism shown by each player was outstanding. The first game against Glossop High School began strong with our offence working overtime to get the ball down our end of the field, but nerves overcame the Titans girls and they struggled to score.
The second quarter was a different story. Within the first few minutes of the 12-minute quarter, the girls created a strong lead with 5.1 to 0. They continued to dominate the field in every position through the last two quarters, winning their first game 8.2 to 1.2.
The game against Murray Bridge was played immediately after the first match, so the girls were fatigued and worn out with a few injuries amongst the group. Despite this, their energy levels and persistence remained and helped them push through until the end. The girls won 7.5 to 0, progressing them through to the second round of the SSSSA Knockout competition. The date, school and location are yet to be confirmed, however, we wish the girls the best of luck.
The goal kickers for the day (both games) were Ella Little (5), Sophie Ellis (3), Emmason Ilsley (2), Mikaela Horrigan (1), Charlotte Bruhn (1), Tulle Perryman (1), and Sarah Nulty (1).
Best players were awarded to Tyne Bosko, Chelsea Croser, Mikaela Horrigan, Emmason Ilsley, Emily Close and Tulle Perryman.
Well done to all players involved in the competition.
