A good part of building Resilience in our children is being a positive role model
Here are some tips to help with this:
- Take care of your health - show children that it is important to eat healthy foods, get enough sleep and exercise regularly. These reduce daily stress and give us the mental and physical strength to deal with those serious challenges
- Show understanding, compassion and kindness – imagine walking in other people’s shoes
- Take a deep breath when you are stressed – breathe in slowly (belly breathe) for the count of 4, hold for 5 and breathe out for 7
- Be in charge of your emotions – express them in constructive ways
- Be patient – Keep trying when things are frustrating and be patient with your children when they are trying
- Let go of being perfect – remember mistakes are a part of learning
- Stop and think – when things go wrong, try not to jump to conclusions. Ask yourself some questions such as, “How else can I think about this?”, “What else can I do?”, “What parts can I control?”
- Take responsibility for your own feelings and actions in front of your children
- Use humour – it reduces stress and helps us look at challenging situations with a positive outlook
- Stay positive – enjoy simple pleasures and look for the upside of challenges
- Reach out for help if you need it and help others if they need it
