On Monday 1 May, Tenison Woods College basketball welcomed the arrival of Rowville Sports Academy to Mount Gambier for three days of Basketball, training sessions and meeting new friends.
Rowville is coached by Australian basketball coaching legend Dean Kinsman and would prove to be a stern test for both males and females involved in the Titans Academy programs.
Day 1 consisted of lunch for both schools before the male athletes headed off to the Ice House to be run through their paces by Pioneers and SEABL head coach Richard Hill. Meanwhile, the female athletes stayed at Tenison Woods College to have a hard training session with Titans head coach Rohan Stevenson and Rowville head coach Dean Kinsman. Both training sessions were great ways to start off the Rowville tour and Pioneers coach Richard Hill complimented the male students saying, “Pleasure to work with and great group of young men”.
After training, Tenison Woods College and Rowville students were broken up into their billeting groups and sent home for the end of day 1.
Day 2 kicked off with games between the two colleges with Rowville coming up winners in four of the morning games in both the male and female division. After the morning games another training session was held with coach Kinsman, Stevenson and Hill. The coaches focused on transition defence and shooting techniques. Again all athletes were praised for their eagerness to learn; they made training a enjoyable experience with coaches extremely pleased.
All Tenison billeting families also sang the praises of the billeting Rowville students with several parents willing to trade their own sons and daughters for the visiting students! The rest of day 2 and into the evening consisted of more games and also gave the opportunity for billeting families to come and watch games at Barrie Holmes Stadium. Having games into the evening was a great time for athletes, coaches, teachers and parents to mingle and exchange notes while watching great basketball.
Day 3 was the final day of our Rowville basketball tour with grand finals being played in front of a packed crowed in the Barrie Holmes stadium and the feeling was electric. First game up at 9.15am was the Tenison Woods College open women playing against Rowville 1’s in what was a very good game played in great spirits. Bella Stratford and Olivia Fuller were a one-two-punch for the home side creating many opportunities and helping the open Titans women’s team to a 68-50 win. Coach Dan Stratford was extremely happy with the result and looks forward to what the future holds for his very talented girls group later in the year.
At 10.30am it was the final game of the tour with Tenison Woods College open boys playing against a very talented Rowville 1 group who had yet to lose a game over the 3 days. The Titans boys needed to step up in this game and step up they did! Defence and rebounding were the Titans strength and ultimately led to their victory in an evenly battled contest, with a final result of 56-47. Rowville coach Kinsman complimented the Titans boys on their willingness to buy into the defensive rules and principals.
What a great way to end a great week! High level basketball, meeting great friends and learning about new places.
I would like to congratulate all students and staff for a fantastic week and look forward to working with you all in the future.
