Students and the Environment

21.02.17

At Tenison Woods College we are blessed to have the ability to teach and learn in a picturesque environment. We all too often forget to see the beauty in the things that surround us; new leaves on a branch, the perennial plants still holding on to flowers through the long summer, or simply the diverse ecosystems on our school grounds. We find it far easier to see the possible (yet unlikely) harm of a spider or a bee than the benefits they bring to our lives. At Tenison Woods College, we encourage our students to see each of God’s many creations as gifts of life.

On Friday 3 March, the Early Learning Centre through to the Year 11 students and staff will participate in our annual Clean Up Australian Schools Day. This day has been running for many years, and our school has a proud history of collecting, sorting and correctly disposing many tonnes of waste material littering our local area. We inspire our students to do more in their local community and environment and this day is a great opportunity to pitch in and help out. Without opportunities like this to see the beauty in our natural surroundings, we fall too quickly into the mind set of “why am I picking up someone else’s rubbish?”

I am always reminded of why we continue to participate through a number of ways; from the thanks for the council and people living around our local neighbourhood, to the respect for the pristine part of the world where we are lucky to live, and lastly and most importantly, because we can.

If you would like to be involved on the day (12.00pm - 1.20pm) and hold a current police check, please contact myself at linnt@tenison.catholic.edu.au to help assist in collection and supervision.
